5 Reasons Why Self-Aware People Live Happier Lives

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” ― C.G. Jung

In our modern, fast-paced society many people are constantly stressed, overworked, tired and unable to focus. Each and every one of us knows these moments when we look at ourselves and our lives and have the distinct feeling that something isn’t right. Everyone has these moments of self-awareness. By consciously developing self-awareness you can greatly improve on the quality of your life and feel more relaxed and comfortable. Self-awareness is a rare quality so people who have developed it definitely stand out in the crowd. It is about understanding what makes us tick, recognizing our habits and reflecting on ourselves. The more we realize about our self and act on it, the easier it becomes.

Here are 5 examples why people that develop their self-awareness are happier than others:

1. They are able to recognize and learn from their mistakes

Everybody makes mistakes and that is perfectly fine. But many people don’t realize that making a mistake is a great opportunity to reflect on it and learn from it. Self-aware people accept the mistake as their mistake and try to figure out what exactly went wrong. This gives them the opportunity to make a better decision the next time around. Accepting responsibility for your mistakes is crucial if you want to grow and ultimately be happier. If you can cultivate a habit of reflecting on your mistakes and take full responsibility, your brain will adjust and ultimately make better decisions because you took the time to realize what really went wrong along the way.

2. They are healthier

Stress is all around us these days and it has a tremendous impact on your lives. Constantly being stressed will cause us to react to what is happening, instead of interacting with the world around us, because we don’t have the energy to do so. When all we do is react, we tend to feel like we lost control. By looking at the current situation and figuring out what causes our stress we get a chance to make changes in our lives that will reduce the amount of stress that we are experiencing or even completely eliminate it. When you reduce stress you will inevitably become healthier, your cognitive abilities will increase and it will be easier for you to focus.

3. They have better relationships

Having a deep knowledge about their own strengths and weaknesses allows self-aware people to be more compassionate to others. Instead of judging the behaviour of others, they look at it more objectively. Because they understand themselves, it is easier for them to see things from the perspective of their partners, friends or family members. Since they also have a deep understanding of what is good for them and what isn’t, they will recognize toxic people more often and are quicker in letting them go from their lives. This in turn leads to more nourishing relationships which are a big part of happiness.

“At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.” ― Lao Tzu

4. They achieve their goals a lot more frequently

Self-aware people realize when they’re standing in the way of achieving their own goals. Because they are aware of their thoughts and actions, it is easy for them to recognize when something they do would sabotage reaching a goal. When you are able to clearly see the road that leads to your goal, reaching that goal becomes a lot easier. Being able to recognize when something would lead you astray from reaching your goal is invaluable. Self-aware people also realize when they can’t reach their goals all by themselves and will readily accept help from others when necessary. Instead of trying over and over again, they reach out to their friends, co-workers and mentors who will most often be happy to provide assistance.

5. They are authentic

Most of all, self-aware people are just that: aware of small yet crucial details about themselves. This in turn makes it easy for them to accept their flaws and either work around them or just embrace them. You will find that a lot of self-aware people are just the way they seem to be on the outside. They don’t have to hide who they are. This also reduces the amount of stress self-aware people experience, as they don’t have to pretend to be someone that they aren’t. As a bonus, people are drawn to others who are authentic and don’t seem to always wear a mask to “fit in” or “get along with everybody”. This is especially true for leaders: Employees are more likely to perform better when they work for someone who takes responsibility for their own actions and decisions, is able to admit their failures and work with their employees to fix a problem instead of just telling them what to do.

Being self-aware has shown to be tremendously helpful in everyday life, especially when it is as fast paced and hectic as it is for many people these days. Self-awareness and introspection can be tremendously helpful in regaining inner peace and developing it is well worth the effort. It will improve the quality of your life in many areas. You will be more relaxed throughout your day, your relationships will be deeper and more fulfilling and you will have more energy to focus on the things in your life that are important to you. Do yourself the favor and embrace that chance.
